CHAPTER 5 · FOUNDATIONS

Just Got Scammed? What to Do Right Now

Your trust was exploited, not your intelligence. That distinction matters, because shame is the single biggest reason people wait too long to act, and the first hour is often the window where money and accounts are still recoverable.

The First Hour, in Order

  1. If money was wired, call your bank immediately. Wire recall requests are typically only possible within the first 24 to 72 hours.
  2. If a card or account number was shared, call the issuer directly and freeze or cancel it.
  3. If a password was given up, change it immediately, along with any other account reusing that same password.
  4. Document everything now, while details are fresh: dates, amounts, messages, phone numbers.
  5. Report it. See our full guide on what to do after reporting for the steps most guides skip.

What Nobody Tells You

The emotional aftermath is real and deserves its own attention, not just the practical steps. Feeling embarrassed, angry, or foolish is a completely normal response to having your trust deliberately exploited by someone who does this professionally. That reaction doesn’t need to be fixed before you act, it just shouldn’t be allowed to delay acting.

Common Questions

What if it happens on a weekend, when my bank is closed?

Most banks have a 24-hour fraud line separate from regular branch hours, usually printed on the back of your card. Call it immediately regardless of the day or time; wire and card fraud windows don’t pause for weekends, and neither should your response.

Should I feel embarrassed about what happened?

That feeling is a completely normal reaction, not a fair judgment of what happened. The manipulation was engineered specifically to prevent you from noticing it, which is a design problem, not a reflection of your intelligence or character.
